bruce springsteen’s eulogy for clarence clemens is the most romantic thing i’ve ever read... <3

ID begin. A screen cap of Bruce Springsteen's eulogy for Clarence Clemens. The text reads as follows.

So, I'll miss my friend, his sax, the force of nature his sound was, his glory, his foolishness, his accomplishments, his face, his hands, his humor, his skin, his noise, his confusion, his power, his peace. But his love and his story, the story that he gave me, that he whispered in my ear, that he allowed me to tell... and that he gave to you... is gonna carry on. I’m no mystic, but the undertow, the mystery and power of Clarence and my friendship leads me to believe we must have stood together in other, older times, along other rivers, in other cities, in other fields, doing our modest version of god’s work... work that’s still unfinished. So I won’t say goodbye to my brother, I'll simply say, see you in the next life, further on up the road, where we will once again pick up that work, and get it done. Big Man, thank you for your kindness, your strength, your dedication, your work, your story. Thanks for the miracle... and for letting a little white boy slip through the side door of the Temple of Soul.

ID end.

So, real talk to all y'all fellow witches out there, doomscrolling social media and unfavorably comparing your practices to the carefully manicured and curated feeds you're consuming:

Don't. They are them. You are you.

In the way an "instagram ready" meal is often agonized over with the lens and goes cold before it's eaten, so too is that perfect altar setup.

Not many of us have the financial resources to keep up with the nonstop freight-train of content creation, with new selections of antique sideboards/buffets strewn with all new ephemera for the season, etc. etc. etc. And that's a-okay.

(and so is having all of the fancy stuff and showing it off, and creating those art pieces as a form of devotion. Being chill has to go both ways)

A wild heart, full of witchfire, is easily obtained free of charge and doesn't take up any extra space in a cramped apartment. You don't NEED that stuff, and it's perfectly fine to still want it and seek it out. Just don't bust your budget.

There is an infinite variety of witchery, and yours is every bit as beautiful and terrible.

I am fortunate to have a certain amount of space for altars, and so I have many altars to a multiplicity of deities, full of neat objects.

Which all need to be dusted, and the altar cloths washed (and of course, they’re all hand wash and air dry), and I need to scrape off the candle wax from the holders, and replace the mostly-burnt candles. So, yeah, cool to have, and also more work to maintain than I have had time or energy for in rather a while. I am totally failing the housekeeping side of things at present, and I don’t see that changing soon.

It’s not that I don’t enjoy the cleaning time (unlike cleaning the kitchen, for example). It’s useful time to reflect on the deity and our relationship, and whether that object is still suitable, and to rearrange and make new altars. But it is a lot of time, given the number of, “oh, this is perfect for X altar!” items that I have accumulated over the years.

I’m tempted to go back to one simple altar, and just have pictures of all the deities up on the wall.

And then, at some point after I do that, I will think, “So-And-So needs Their own altar”, and the cycle will start over.

Do what works for you at a given time, and know that will change.

svartikotturinn asked:

I figured this might be out of your scope, but also that if I wanted reliable answers from a non-Nazi (OK, I’m repeating myself) I should ask you: where can I learn more about Slavic (specifically East Slavic) paganism? I’ve always wanted to learn more and get in touch with my roots, but the war in Ukraine has certainly amplified it (I’m half-Ukrainian myself).

thorraborinn answered:

Yeah, definitely outside my scope unfortunately. The best I can do is recommend you follow @slavicafire if you don’t already, and check out some of her static pages about it:

I probably have followers who know more, hopefully they will also have some advice. Hope this at least helps a little.

New beginnings are often hard, and it’s ok to want to take things slowly and not put too much on yourself at the start. You don’t need to retreat into a cave or anything, but keeping your own counsel, doing the work and making sure it gets done well, these are the important things right now. Use your tools, remember who’s in charge (hint: it’s You), and let other people do whatever they’re gonna do. What can you do in your life, locally? How can you improve things as they are in your own kingdom? Stay in your own lane, walk your own path, and focus on your own work. Today is not a day to take on the mightiest dragon in the skies.
